Questions about tax benefits? Start here.

As a UCLA Extension student, you may be eligible for a number of tax credits, savings plans, or deductions.  Although we cannot offer tax advice, below you will find information that may be helpful.

Tax Credits

UCLA Extension students may be eligible for the Lifetime Learning Tax Credit or American Opportunity Act Tax Credit under provisions of the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, provided your adjusted gross income is within current IRS specifications. See IRS Publication 970 Tax Benefits for Education for complete information, including eligibility requirements.

Reporting Requirements: The IRS requires UCLA Extension to report records for each student from whom we have received qualified fee payments. Under Federal tax law, you are required to provide your Tax ID number/Social Security number to the University so that it may be included on the Form 1098-T filed by the University with the IRS.

UCLA Extension students can update their SSN records online any time by logging into our Student Portal under My Profile. For more information about our annual reporting requirements, visit the Student Privacy section in our Student Rights and Responsibilities Center.

Through the Tab Service Company (TSC) you can view or print your 1098-T form online by going to the TSC site at www.tsc1098t.com and entering the following:

  • Site ID number: 11558
  • User Name: Your UCLA Extension ID (a number beginning with X)
  • Password: For your initial login, your password is the last 4 digits of your Tax ID number/Social Security number. If you do not have or did not provide this number to us, your default password will be 0000. If you created a password in a previous year, that will continue to be your password. Please note, the last 4 digits will only work the first time you access the website.

Password Troubleshooting

Select the Forgot Password link if the last 4 digits of your SSN do not work. Enter the school site ID and your UCLA Extension ID for the username. If there is no email address on file, you will receive a message stating no information has been found.

If it is the first time accessing the site, you will be prompted to change your password.  Enter your current password (last four digits of your SSN) and then enter a new password.

The new password must be at least 8 characters and contain at least one upper case letter, one lower case letter, one numeric character and one special character.  This will be your new password for future logon attempts. The last 4 digits of your SSN will no longer work so please make note of it for future use.

Do not have a SSN? Enter 0000 for the temporary password. After clicking Log In, an automated email will be sent to your email address on file which will allow you to reset your password.

Once you have created a new password, you can be notified in future years via email when your form is available online. If you select electronic notification, you will not receive a paper copy of your form in subsequent years. We ask that you take advantage of this service to reduce postage costs and lessen the environmental impact.

If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact the Tab Services Call Center at (888) 220-2540 or e-mail us at 1098t@uclaextension.edu.

Section 529 Savings Plans

Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code allows taxpayers to establish accounts on behalf of a designated beneficiary (e.g., child, grandchild, spouse, niece, nephew, friend, or even himself or herself). Currently, earnings and qualified distributions from 529 Plans are tax free at both the state and federal level. Qualified distributions may be applied toward fees and required books/supplies for all courses, certificate candidacies, colloquia, independent studies, and internships offered through UCLA Extension. California’s Golden State ScholarShare is one of the most competitive IRS 529 Savings Plans.

Tax Deductions

Even if you do not qualify for a tax credit, some ancillary educational expenses might be tax deductible, such as books, meals, lodging, and travel. Consult with your state or federal tax agency for more information. UCLA Extension students can print copies of payment receipts through our Student Portal under My Account History.
