The Music of Franz Schubert

About this course:

Franz Schubert is one of the great composers of the early nineteenth century. Born in 1797, Schubert was first noticed by Antonio Salieri, continued a career as a younger Viennese contemporary of Beethoven, but sadly died at the very young age of thirty-one. Schubert was known primarily as the best composer of lieder during this period. While songs make up the bulk of his repertory, he is also known for his exciting chamber music, masterfully balanced symphonic style, and virtuosic piano writing. His music is often more intimate and emotional, challenging even the most mature listeners. In this course, we listen to and analyze some of the most famous works by Schubert and relate them to the art, literature, and history of the early nineteenth century. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
