Law and Ethics for Addiction Professionals

This course is designed to understand the legal and ethical implications related to counseling while students also clarify their own beliefs and values.
Interpret the applicable federal, state, and agency laws and regulations that apply to addiction counseling
Define and identify the scope of practice for addiction professionals and recognize when referral, supervision, or consultation is required
Characterize the consequences of violating the code of ethics and the ramifications of non-compliance with confidentiality regulations
About this course:
This course is designed to help students clarify their own beliefs and values, review the dynamics of the profession's Code of Ethics, gain knowledge about legal implications and explore ethical issues related to substance use disorder counseling. In addition, students learn about the scope of practice for certified addiction counselors.
Required course in the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling Certificate. Restricted course. Web enrollments automatically generate a "Permission to Enroll" request.
Enrollment deadline: February 17, 2025. Visitors not permitted.
Enrollment is typically reserved for adult students 18 years of age and older. Students under 18 years of age may receive consent to enroll based on special academic competence and approval by the instructor. If you are a student under 18 years of age, you must submit a request to enroll in the course 8 weeks before the course start date to mentalhealth@uclaextension.edu for your request to be considered.
