The cinema of Italy has given the world great films and has influenced film movements worldwide. The post-World War II Neorealismo period merged cinematic realism with a focus on glaring social problems and postwar poverty, while Fellini’s imitable cinematic style combined surreal carnival with incisive social critique. In this course, we view some of the greatest Italian films from 1945 to 1997, and analyze how they use the verbal, visual and visceral art form, and what they had to say about the human condition. We watch six films: The Battle of Algiers (1966) , The Tree Of Wooden Clogs (1978), The Best Of Youth (2003) , Shoe Shine (1946), Bitter Rice (1949), and finally La Dolce Vita (1960).
