  • Understand the definitions, code of ethics, and standards of practice of Horticultural Therapy
  • An introduction to client assessment, evaluation, and appropriate Horticultural Therapy interventions
  • Become aware of the groups of people that benefit from horticultural therapy, the different characteristics and considerations of working with these groups, and the settings and program types
  • Discover the use of plant materials and horticultural activities for therapeutic purposes

About this course:

The foundations of horticultural therapy course introduces the student to the definitions operational standards, and practice of horticultural therapy as outlined by the AHTA. Students will learn evidence-based theories and approaches for using plants to increase skills and wellness in therapeutic settings; learn the historical development and the current state of horticultural therapy and how this unique approach addresses the needs of various populations. Students will be introduced to concepts surrounding program development, needs assessment and therapeutic interventions. The class uses a combination of online learning, guest speakers, field trips and hands-on activities to provide a deep understanding of the fundamental components of a successful horticultural therapy practice. This course is accredited by the AHTA (American Horticultural Therapy Association).
