Instructor Statement:
Every writer comes to the craft from a different place, with unique visions and goals. My goal is to support you in this, to help you speak with your own voice, leaving my own opinions, biases and aesthetic preferences at the door. As an instructor I will give you the tools to carve your own path, to help you transform abstract ideas into printed ink, to teach you how to edit your own work thoughtfully and how to go about finding a home for your stories. Writing is not merely a solitary endeavor, but greatly benefits from community. I commit, and expect my students to commit, to building a safe communal space, to foster an environment of empathy and support, where everyone feels open to express themselves. It is a brave act to share one’s work at any stage of development, and students should feel comfortable enough with each other and the class to go to potentially vulnerable places. As for craft, it is vital to read the work of a diverse array of great writers and to learn the rules of storytelling and narrative structure, even if your goal ends up being to break them.
