What you can learn.

  • Read and discuss contemporary and historical examples of love poems
  • Explore what makes love poems express your complex emotions without getting cringy
  • Learn to imbue your writing with sincerity without devolving into sentimentality
  • Identify and eliminate cliches in your writing

About this course:

No poetic topic is more fundamental, or potentially cringe-inducing, than the love poem. In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll examine some of the best of the genre, from Chen Chen to Shakespeare, Danez Smith to Edna St Vincent Millay, to uncover what makes a love poem sing, and write our own. Incinerate cliches, invite specificity, and figure out how to be sincere in your writing without inviting an eye-roll.
