Read and discuss contemporary and historical examples of love poems
Explore what makes love poems express your complex emotions without getting cringy
Learn to imbue your writing with sincerity without devolving into sentimentality
Identify and eliminate cliches in your writing
About this course:
No poetic topic is more fundamental, or potentially cringe-inducing, than the love poem. In this 3-hour workshop, we’ll examine some of the best of the genre, from Chen Chen to Shakespeare, Danez Smith to Edna St Vincent Millay, to uncover what makes a love poem sing, and write our own. Incinerate cliches, invite specificity, and figure out how to be sincere in your writing without inviting an eye-roll.
