About This Course
The Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture ("Academy of Painting and Sculpture"), founded in 1648, established artistic standards that dominated Europe from the 17th to the 19th century. In this course, we explore the formation, development, and ultimate decline of the Academy as artists began to question its authority and present independent exhibitions. We investigate this pivotal shift in French art, tracing the emergence of a new definition of "art" from the challenges posed by Gustave Courbet's Pavilion of Realism to the establishment of the Salon d'Automne. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
