The American Presidency

About this course:

At a time when media coverage of the White House often privileges personality over principle, this course invites a deeper look at the American presidency—not just as an individual office, but as a uniquely American institution. In this course, we examine the origins of presidential power, the evolving architecture of the White House, and what its design and expansion reveal about federalism, executive ambition, and the projection of national authority. We also assess what defines a presidency as successful or failed, recognizing that history often complicates these judgments. Some ineffective leaders leave enduring legacies, while others collapse under unmet expectations. Moments of strength can emerge in otherwise weak presidencies—and moments of failure can shadow the strongest. Throughout, we explore how Congress, the courts, the media, and public opinion have shaped—and at times surrendered to—the expanding reach of executive power. This course uses the Hybrid format which allows students to participate remotely and/or in the classroom. This course will be recorded. Students will have access to videos for the duration of the course.
