About this course:
This course provides hands-on learning opportunities for Horticulture Certificate students. This course offers the student an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom within the industry and affords an opportunity to take advantage of appropriate technology, horticultural practices and applied science. Internships are valuable for learning first-hand about areas of botany, biology and horticulture practices, landscape maintenance and plant identification not covered in our core curriculum. This is a competitive and directed internship with the Los Angeles County Arboretum. Qualified students are encouraged to apply and two students meeting the application process will work in an unpaid position with the LA County Arboretum in Arcadia, California. This in-person field experience covers one quarter (11 weeks) for a minimum of 60 hours . Students will apply the content of their previous courses and become familiar with the day-to-day operation and horticulture practices within the arboretum. Open only to qualified students enrolled in the Horticulture Certificate. Each internship application will address with the client (LA County Arboretum) the schedule of hours and the learning objectives and educational value to the student of the internship. Students will accumulate the 60 directed hours and perform the expected skills needed, as well as expected deliverables due or produced at the end of the internship.
