Joseph G. Devanney Scholarship

Supporting Students in the Personal Financial Planning Certificate

Financial planner assisting female client

The Joseph G. Devanney Scholarship Fund was established by the Devanney Estate to support students enrolling in the capstone course for the Personal Financial Planning Certificate at UCLA Extension. Mr. Devanney was an instructor in the Personal Financial Planning Certificate program for 20 years and is often thought of as the “grandfather” of the certificate.

His work both inside and outside of the classroom went well beyond the call of duty, as he spent countless hours meeting with students and advising them on their academic and career goals. His efforts were nationally recognized in 2002, when he received the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA) Excellence in Teaching Award, a national honor given annually to only one individual. He was also among the inaugural recipients of the UCLA Extension Dean’s Distinguished Instructor Award in 2006.

Since Fall 2009, one Joseph G. Devanney Scholarship has been awarded each academic quarter to offset course fees for either of the certificate’s capstone courses: MGMT X 430.38 Personal Financial Planning Capstone (PFP) or MGMT X 430.516 Financial Plan Development and Presentation (PFP Accelerated). The scholarship underwrites the full cost of the capstone course. Scholarships are not transferable and expire within one year of award date. These scholarships are not awarded based on financial need and applicants are not required to submit financial documentation.

  • Students must be enrolled in the Personal Financial Planning Certificate (CE0032) or the Personal Financial Planning Accelerated Online Certificate (CE0384) at the time of application, and have paid the candidacy fee.
  • Applicants must have successfully completed all other courses in the certificate to be eligible for the Capstone course and this scholarship.
  • Applications must be received within the application window and by the deadline shown.
  • UCLA and UCLA Extension employees and their family members or dependents are not eligible.
  • Eligibility criteria for all final candidates will be checked and confirmed by UCLA Extension.
  • Applicants may only apply for this scholarship the quarter immediately prior to taking the Capstone course.
  • Previous Joseph G. Devanney scholarship winners may not re-apply.

To apply, candidates must submit:

  • Completed application form, including a 250-word typed essay by midnight of the deadline date listed below for their application cycle
  • Applications may only be submitted via email to devanneyscholarship@uclaextension.edu. Applicants may submit information on the one-page application form, as a Word document, or in the body of an email
