About This Course

In this hands-on workshop, students explore the creative and technical dimensions of lens choice in cinematography. From modern cinema glass to vintage, anamorphic, photo, and large-format lenses, the course provides access to an expansive inventory through partnerships with top industry manufacturers and servicers. Hands-on practical work may occur at Arri, Panavision, Zeiss, Cooke, Canon, Vantage/Hawk, Old Fast Glass, Atlas or other appropriate venues. The course begins with asynchronous preparation work and a self-assessment, followed by an in-person deep dive into current lens trends and aesthetics. Through live demonstrations and hands-on participation, students gain firsthand insight into how lens characteristics influence mood, emotion, and narrative tone. They will learn how to assess lenses both creatively and technically by participating in a professional lens test, and apply their learning by serving as Director of Photography on a micro-scene shot with lenses they’ve selected themselves, culminating with a class screening of their edited work. The experience is an opportunity to experiment, take risks, and discover the storytelling potential of lens choice. Throughout, students will also engage with peers and industry partners, building creative connections that extend beyond the classroom.
