About this course:
In this six-week online course students build their repertoire of songs and musical activities to use with young children. This class provides advanced principles of music education, pedagogical strategies, and incorporation of cultural music to guide teachers of early childhood programs in schools, parents at home, and in Mommy and Me classes. Research shows that musical experiences support development and connections to language, reading and math skills, as well as physical, social-emotional and creative skills. By the end of the class, you will have advanced skills for music participation with young children and an understanding of the connection between music and child development. Participants will learn to use the basic musical elements of rhythm, melody and harmony to develop singing and instrumental skills for use in early childhood classrooms.
Course EDUC X 321.44 Music and Movement in Early Childhood Education is a prerequisite. A musical background is not required. At least one assignment requires that you work with a young child or two. A Glockenspiel is required.
