About This Course

Over the past several decades, conventional art historical narratives have been overturned. Previously marginalized artists, including women and people of color, have been inserted and highlighted, as is evidenced today by entering almost any museum. During this period, the dominant 1960s conception of Feminist Art as pertaining to white, middle-class women based in the U.S. broadened to include international artists of color and different social classes, and people of various sexual orientations. This class will focus on work being created by artists today, taking into account historical precedents found internationally in Feminist Art since the 1980s. The course will begin with an online introductory session in which we will examine the pioneering work of such artists as Louise Bourgeois, Cindy Sherman, Jenny Holzer, Kiki Smith, Shirin Neshat, Sophie Calle, the Guerilla Girls, and many others.  The next three session will be spent visiting museums, galleries, and artist studios in the Los Angeles area, where we will explore and discuss work pertinent to the subject matter of our class. Please note that Part I of this course is not a prerequisite for Part II.
